Microevolution (Unit 5)

Dear Parents,

We begin a discussion on microevolutionary theory this week in 7th grade science, which will continue over the next couple of weeks.  Science is a composition of many ideas and theories, one of which is microevolution. Below is a list of topics that will be covered in the upcoming days:

  • Science as a process
  • Microevolution as a change in population of organisms over time
  • Natural selection as one mechanism of microevolution
  • Extinction due to environmental change
  • Microevolution as a change of genetic content due to environmental factors
  • Basic differences between microevolution and macroevolution

We realize that the evolution is a sensitive subject and that there are other ideas concerning the change of organisms over time. You can access the PowerPoints, notes, and activities that will be utilized with this unit on the 7th grade website. A copy of the official board policy concerning teaching controversial topics is available upon request.
